Lend Small Animals a Helping Hand

As San Diego's only small animal rescue, Wee Companions has been in business for over 25 years, providing care for guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, rabbits and hamsters. We need giving, caring people to volunteer in order for our work to continue — sign up to become one by clicking the button below.

How You Can Help

Foster Home

Volunteers, 18 or over and experienced with small animals, will house rescue animals in their home. Foster parent provides optimal husbandry, diet and socialization on a daily basis. Foster parent must be available to bring adoptable animals to and from adoption events at the Wee Companions store on a bi-weekly basis (twice per month).

 

Foster parent will promptly communicate to Lead Volunteer any concerns regarding health or behavior. Foster parent provides photos and description of adoptable animal to be posted on the WCSAA website and social media. All housing needs and dry food are provided by WCSAA, but foster parent will provide fresh food as needed. Foster parent must be willing to relinquish foster animal when requested.

Store Volunteer

Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age.  General duties include: keeping the store clean (dusting, window cleaning, sweeping and sink duty) to ensure a professional appearance; restocking of supplies and expiration date checks; logging and cleaning donated goods while assessing for safety.

 

Volunteers must be comfortable greeting customers, talking about our rescue, and answering questions. Volunteers must be familiar with stocked supplies and offer our information about the products we offer. Volunteers must purchase and wear a WCSAA t-shirt and name badge, along with long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Shelter Volunteer

Volunteers ensure that all animals in the Shelter are healthy and safe.  Volunteers clean the animal enclosures, as well as the center. Food bowls, hay, water and veggies are distributed.

 

On occasion, animals are in need of bathing and nail clipping. Volunteers must understand the basics of animal care and be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Volunteers must purchase and wear a WCSAA t-shirt and name badge, along with long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Transporter

Volunteer must be over 18, have access to a reliable vehicle with working A/C, have a valid driver's license and insurance. Transport may be needed within San Diego County or Southern California between WCSAA, shelters and possibly veterinary offices. Some longer trips may be needed and a stipend towards gas is offered.

 

Off-site Event Volunteer

An independent person with good base knowledge of rescue and species and who enjoys interacting with the public is required for community events. The off-site event volunteer will coordinate with event organizers, collect supplies needed, and set up attractive booth and represent WCSAA at the event.

 

WCSAA will cover fees to attend or parking. Volunteers must purchase and wear a WCSAA t-shirt and name badge, along with long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Sewing Experts

Expert sewers with their own machines who can create fleece/fabric supplies for small animals are needed. Fabric and thread are provided to make hammocks, cage liners, tunnels, cuddle cups/sacs. These may be used for the rescue animals OR sold in store to raise funds. Volunteer can work at home and original creations are encouraged!
